We have lived with ceiling fans all our lives and consider them essential for any tropical home. On the other hand, we don't consider them to be a decorative feature; plain and white is the best. Having said that, we have a preference for KDK and unfortunately, the 56" model of their low profile fan doesn't come in white, so we will have to live with silver. Fortunately the wall of my hi-fi cabinet is silver, so it sort of matches.
